Trekking in the Andes

Cordilliera Blanca, November 2009

It was a very hard trek. We decided not to hire any porters or guides and do this 4-day trek on our own. Our backpacks were really heavy, as we had to carry camping equipment and all the food for 4 days. And this was our first trekking in over 6 months, which we spent on a slow and lazy travels. The highest point of the trek – 4850m above the sea level – was really hard to get to and I struggle a lot and almost quit a few times. The only thing that kept me walking were the views (and probably the fact that there was no other option but keep walking). The views were marvelous – snow covered peaks, beautiful lakes, blue sky and vivid vegetation – and I consider this 4-day trek in Cordilliera Blanca one of the best thing I have done during my travels.

Beautiful shots!! Ok, this is probably a stupid question — but do you have to bring a bear canister with you?

No bears in the Andes (or at least on this trek), so no need for bear canister :)

I like the “there was no option but to keep walking.” That’s definitely a motivator! Great pic!!
