July 2011. Luganville, Vanuanu
I got back from my trip to Vanuatu a few days ago and I’m in the process of going through hundreds of photos I took while there. I had a great time climbing active volcanoes, visiting local villages, swimming in warm ocean waters, walking through the jungle and meeting people.
People. They are probably the best Vanuatu has got to offer. Ni-Vanuatu (that’s how you call people of Vanuatu) are the warmest and nicest people you can think of. Despite most of them living rather simple live and not having much they appear to be very happy. I’ve never felt so welcomed anywhere. Everyone was greeting me with hello, or at least with a smile. And most of them were genuinely surprised when I thought they were beautiful and worth being photographed. Like this girl.
I passed by that building with blue walls quite a few times when in Luganville on Espiritu Santo island, and when I saw that girl sitting there with her shopping bag, I thought she was absolutely gorgeous with her curly hair and big eyes. I asked if I could photograph her, she opened her eyes with surprise and nodded permission. She only smiled when she saw herself on the LCD screen of my camera.
