Hemis Festival

June 2010. Ladakh, India.

Hemis is the name of a monastery located near Leh, the capital of the Indian state of Ladakh. Ladakh is very different then the rest of India. Culturally and ethnically it is mostly Tibetan, so Hemis is a Buddhist monastery. Every June a huge festival is held in Hemis and in 2010 I was lucky to be there and witness it.

I love photographing festivals, as they tend to be very lively, colorful events full of emotions and unpredictable situations, so I was very excited about the opportunity of seeing Hemis festival. The reality however, was not fully in line with what I hoped for. The crowd was unbelievable – it was a mixed of locals and tourists, and the day was really hot. It didn’t help that the celebrations started at 11am, right during the harsh mid-day sun, making the light very unappealing. All of that made taking photographs difficult. I wasn’t happy with the end result and I quickly forgot about the photos.

Yesterday I was looking through my photo archive and I stumbled across those photos again. I still think they are very average, but I’ve managed to rescue a few of them with the help of a mighty Adobe Lightroom, and this is the result:

December wallpaper is out

I am sorry I’m late with this month’s wallpaper! But here it is – amazing mountains of Ladakh, one of India’s most picturesque provinces. Ladakh is located in the north-western corner of India, in the Himalayas. What makes is different from the rest of India is that ethnically and culturally it is Tibetan.

October wallpaper is out!

This month it’s Vanuatu, one of the most magical and spiritual places I have been to. Devoted Hindu people come to Varanasi from all over India to bath in the holly river of Ganga. I will be posting more photos from Varanasi some time soon, as it’s truly amazing place, but for now I am leaving you with this sunset view of the boats on the bank of Ganga.

Hot! So hot!

May 2010. Jaipur, India.

The summer of 2010 was one of the warmest in India in years with many days with temperatures of 48 to 52 Celsius (118-125 F). I must admit that it was a stupid idea to head to India in summer, but that was the only time I was able to go there.  The 3 weeks I spend in colorful province of Rajastan was the most tiring 3 weeks in my entire life. Seriously. Indian summers are hot, but that one was too much even for locals used to high temperatures. So the view like the one on the photo was a common thing. Because what’s better to do when it’s so bloody hot?
